About Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region

Founded in 1988, Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region is a charitable organization working toward a world where everyone has a decent place to live. In Waterloo Region, 1 in 4 households lack a decent, affordable place to live making them at risk of falling into a cycle of poverty. Our model of affordable homeownership bridges a gap for lower-income, working families by providing them with the opportunity to purchase their own Habitat home. Through our unique affordable homeownership program, we offer families a hand up, empowering them to build strength, stability and independence. Habitat for Humanity is a unique and complex non-profit that simultaneously acts as a developer, builder, mortgage-holder, retail operator and social justice advocate. We empower over 1000 volunteers annually, fundraise close to $1 million dollars, and operate two ReStores which together yield $2 million dollars in sales annually. We hold mortgages for over 70 families – the proceeds from which go towards buying more land to build more homes.

Are you our next board member?

The Board of Directors is a diverse group of 11-15 individuals who live and work throughout Waterloo Region and strive to make an impact in their own community. As a Governance Board, they are dedicated to the overall success of the organization – establishing and monitoring the strategic direction, policies and overall administrative, and financial affairs of the affiliate. They act as the employer of the CEO who in turn leads and empowers a staff to operationalize the organization’s strategic plan. The Board monitors the affiliate's effectiveness and service outcomes through a range of performance indicators. Diversifying the Board is a priority. The families and communities we serve are diverse in many ways. By better reflecting this diversity in the makeup of our board, we will increase our understanding of how to best serve Habitat families, and our ability to reach these families and the full range of volunteers, donors and resources we need to partner with them.
