Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region believes in setting up local families for success by helping them build strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership.
With wages not keeping pace to steep rises in housing and rent in Waterloo Region, families are struggling more than ever with affordable homeownership. Housing is considered affordable if it costs less than 30% of your income. In Waterloo Region, 1 in 4 households lacks a decent, affordable place to live making them at risk of falling into a cycle of poverty. That is why Habitat Waterloo Region partners with lower-income families to help them build strength, stability, and independence through affordable homeownership.
By putting families into a position where they can thrive, Habitat Waterloo Region helps to combat the ongoing housing crisis, one home at a time. Through reduced reliance on social housing and food banks, better education and employment outcomes, and improved health, every Habitat home built helps create $175,000 worth of benefits for the local community.
Funds generated from the Habitat ReStore are used to help build more homes for families in need of an affordable place to live.
Our model of affordable homeownership bridges a gap for lower-income, working families by providing them with the opportunity to purchase their own Habitat home. Habitat homes help families avoid making unjust choices between rent and other basic necessities by providing them with a mortgage they can afford. Through our unique affordable homeownership program, we offer families a hand up, empowering them to build strength, stability, and independence.
We build safe and decent homes that provide a solid foundation for families to build better, healthier lives for themselves and their children. The homes are funded through cash donations, product donations, and other Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region initiatives.
Families purchase an affordable home from Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region at fair market value, with no down payment required. Habitat homeowners pay an affordable, interest-free mortgage and make payments geared to their income.
Mortgage payments made by Habitat homeowners are invested into a revolving fund, which is used to build more homes for families in Waterloo Region. As homeowners pay off their mortgage we are able to increase our impact in the community.
Selected Habitat homeowners volunteer 500 hours towards the building of their own home, the Restore, and other Habitat programs and activities.
