Homeownership Eligibility Requirements

Since 1988 Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region has been partnering with families in need who had dreams of homeownership in the Waterloo region.
Dreams Of Owning Your Own Home?
Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region may be able to help! We partner with lower-income families living in Waterloo Region and provide them with the opportunity to purchase their own decent home through our affordable homeownership program. Habitat’s path to homeownership is an in-depth process, requiring hard work, time and dedication. This process helps to ensure the long-term success of Habitat homeowners.
Are You Eligible To Become A Habitat Homeowner?
The First Step To Qualifying
We partner with families who have at least one child under 13 years of age, are Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents, and have lived in Waterloo Region for a minimum of three consecutive years. Alongside this, we also look to ensure applicants meet the requirements below.Able To Make Affordable Mortgage Payments
Able to make affordable mortgage payments Habitat for Humanity does not give away free homes - the families who partner with us pay an affordable mortgage that is geared towards their household income. Families must demonstrate their ability to pay a mortgage back to Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region and meet their ongoing monthly expenses.
- More Information
The household must have a steady stable source of income appropriate for their family size and the predictable costs of owning a home and a budget that works.
The annual income must be within established Income Thresholds.
If you have declared bankruptcy or filed for a consumer proposal, it must be three years from the discharge date before your application will be considered.
Willing To Partner With Habitat Waterloo Region
The families who partner with us must be willing to commit to a homeownership and mortgage agreement, be a Habitat ambassador, and volunteer 500 hours. These hours can involve volunteering to build homes, work in our ReStores, help in the community, and attending workshops on homeownership and financial literacy.
In Need Of Better Housing
The families we partner with cannot obtain a traditional mortgage, and their present housing is potentially inadequate. These potential homebuyers may be dealing with poorly maintained, unhealthy or overcrowded housing, unaffordable rent, or inaccessible housing for people living with disabilities.
Stories From Our Families
With a little help, we all have the potential to stand on our own.
Your financial support, your voice and your time will help bring strength, stability and independence to families in need of a decent place to live.
