Position Title

Director of Construction

Reporting to 

CEO Karen Coviello

Position Summary

Director of Construction will be a collaborative contributor to creating a stable and leading organization, guiding a talented build team in multiple locations. Responsibilities include Leadership, Construction Project Management, Safety & Quality Oversight and Land Acquisition.

Position Type

This position is a full time, permanent role: 40 hours per week, including some evenings and weekends, with some travel required. 

Responsibilities Include:

Leadership

  • Reports to the CEO and is a key member of the senior leadership team
  • Plays an active role in fostering a collaborative work environment
  • Provides regular progress reports to the CEO and other members of the leadership team
  • Overall responsibility for the leadership and engagement of the build team including the volunteer team leads
  • Works collaboratively with the Family Services Manager, to facilitate a successful home ownership program, from start to finish
  • Works collaboratively with the fund development team to maintain existing build GIK and source out new GIK donations and sponsorships for the build department
  • Implements and reviews performance objectives with direct reports, and directs the professional development of the build team

Construction Project Management

  • Provides leadership, planning processes and oversight to all construction efforts to ensure that projects at every location are executed in accordance with the design, budget and schedule
  • Develops annual budget and plan for construction
  • Ensure that all expenditures are approved, review monthly budget updates and build department costs at year end
  • Works with the build team to develop and implement operating plans, schedules, supply chains, reports, control measures, etc
  • Oversees all build projects, monitoring scheduling and ensuring timelines are met
  • Develop and maintain complete and accurate project files
  • Is responsible for the process of obtaining build permits and titles as required
  • Works with the build team to develop workarounds for project delays
  • Leads regular planning meetings with build team and partners
  • Oversees the bidding process and provides operational input into preparation of take-offs, estimates, etc
  • Participates in review of final estimate packages for accuracy and completeness. Transitions the process from bid to operations
  • Investigates new approaches to construction to reduce costs/time viable within the Habitat program
  • Oversight of required building inspections and other communication with building and other inspection officials
  • Oversees deficiency/warranty work.

Safety and Quality

  • Responsible for oversight of build site Health & Safety Program including inspections, hazard identification & risk assessment (HIRA), protocols surrounding Safe Work Procedures, PPE management, and related documentation
  • Ensures construction meets building and safety codes and provides quality control checks
  • Oversees the management of quality control measures, including the completion of checkout lists at key milestones during construction process, ensures Home Warranty Inspections are completed as required, materials used are of an acceptable grade and construction is completed within allowable variances

Land Acquisition

  • Seeks out land acquisition opportunities in line with the organization’s strategic objectives
  • Responsible for ensuring environmental concerns are addressed and further investigations are conducted as necessary

Competencies and Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma and/or equivalent related work experience
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a project management role, ideally leading a construction team.
  • A keen interest in making a difference in our community, via the not-for-profit
  • Experience with tendering and negotiating contracts
  • Experience with planning, budgeting and reporting on status of projects including costs, timelines and forecasting
  • Experience cultivating and maintaining a culture of safety at all times
  • Thorough knowledge of H&S construction standards
  • Excellent communication skills in both oral and written forms
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • An appetite for learning and self-development
  • Ability to think strategically and identify opportunities
  • Self-motivated and reflective with attention to detail in all aspects of work
  • Strong ability to multitask and meet deadlines
  • Relationship focused
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Teams and the Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word

Additional Information

  • The successful candidate must provide proof of an acceptable Police Records Check The successful candidate must provide proof of a valid Ontario Driver’s License, adequate insurance and a clear driving record
  • Orientation will be provided in the first week of employment
  • Specific training on our culture, policies and procedure will be self-directed with some specific on-line and in-person modules available
