We work to bring our community together to help families build strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership. With the help of volunteers, donors and community partners, we provide a solid foundation for low-income families in Waterloo Region.

Role Description

Position Title

Hospitality Shopper


242 Kehl Street, Kitchener


9 am - 11 am every Monday and/or as needed

Time Commitment

Volunteer for 1-2 shifts. After this time, a commitment of 10 shifts over 3 months is required.

To carry out the stated mission of Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region. To support the hospitality program by shopping for groceries and supplies.  

Reports to

Volunteer Services staff


  • Be available as scheduled (Monday morning each week)
  • Review the grocery list and any notes and obtain clarification before shopping
  • Target grocery drop off by 11 am
  • Flexible with additional shopping day/time that is based on build site activity
  • Watch for deals
  • Submit all receipts to the onsite Volunteer staff each week
  • Communicate when items are not available
  • Work as part of the Hospitality volunteer group

Qualifications and/or Skills

  • Reliable transportation; valid driver’s license; valid insurance
  • Ability to read labels and store signage
  • Commitment to paying attention to detail and shopping accordingly
  • Must have a working cell phone
  • Capable of lifting numerous bags/boxes of groceries
  • Must be at least 18 years of age

Orientation and Training

  • Habitat Waterloo Region Hospitality Orientation
  • Food safety training
  • Tour of the build site
  • AODA
  • Company credit card is provided

Working Conditions

    • Travelling by car
    • Physical ability to stand, walk and reach while shopping, including putting grocery items in the cart and carrying them onto the build site
    • Prolonged periods of standing and/or walking
    • Various weather conditions

Screening Process

  • Interview
  • Initial trial period
  • Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check


  • Gain satisfaction helping local families in need, purchase safe, decent, affordable housing
  • Meet new people and build long-term relationships

Health & Safety

  • Comfortable anti-slip footwear


  • Represent Habitat Waterloo Region in a positive manner
  • Deliver weekly groceries on time
  • Put groceries away properly
  • Accurately shop for groceries
  • Submit receipts to Volunteer services staff
