Role Description

Position Title

Construction Project Lead in Training


Location 

25 Sheldon Drive, Cambridge


Hours

8:30am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday


Time Commitment

Proceed through the Construction Project Lead in Training  application process. Volunteer Services staff will then assess whether it is a suitable fit, and the volunteer may choose to opt out at this stage if they wish. If both parties agree its a good fit, the volunteer is expected to commit to a minimum of 6 months.

Purpose

 A Construction Project Lead in Training supports volunteer staff and Construction Project Leads in the workshop by helping guide and support volunteers through daily tasks, promoting safe tool use, and keeping the workspace organized and productive.


Reports to

 Volunteer Services staff

Responsibilities

  • Support onsite training and supervision of volunteers
  • Regularly assist in leading 1-5 volunteers
  • Assist with hands on work when required
  • Care for tools and materials
  • Ensure safety on site at all times

Qualifications and/or Skills

  • Demonstrates an understanding of the Habitat for Humanity philosophy and the desire to promote it 
  • Possesses knowledge and use of hand and power tools   
  • Exhibits leadership skills
  • Is dependable
  • Positive attitude
  • Is able to effectively communicate with staff and volunteers
  • Possesses excellent listening skills and desire to follow instructions
  • Some hands-on woodworking experience is an asset
  • Must be at least 18 years of age 

Orientation and Training

  • Annual Habitat Waterloo Region volunteer orientation and completion of a safety quiz 
  • Mandatory safety courses as required
  • Safeguarding training 
  • Ongoing on-site workshop safety training
  • AODA certificate completion

Screening Process

  • Interview by invitation
  • Potential invitation to become Workshop Lead

Working Conditions

    • Working in a climate-controlled workshop space
    • Some exposure to the elements
    • Working in an active workshop with inherent safety risks
    • Working independently and/or with a team

Health & Safety

  • Green patch CSA-approved footwear (available to borrow) 
  • Long pants required
  • No excessively loose clothing or dangling jewellery
  • Appropriate dress for all weather types

Outcomes

  • Represents Habitat Waterloo Region in a positive manner 
  • Accomplish quality work in a variety of woodworking and craft projects
  • Be an active participant in learning how to provide leadership to other volunteers
  • Assist in guiding other volunteers through various projects
  • Maintain a tidy worksite
  • Create a safe workspace by following all safety portocols
